Trace a whole profile
For a section the two faces cannot describe: a filled
haunch, a widening pier, or the two shells of a dome. Trace each closed
outline in turn; the joints come from rays out of a picked centre, so
every shell is cut at the same angles.

With both ends imposed the thrust stays free and the other
two parameters become results: the pole's ordinate is whatever carries
the line from A to B. The force polygon shows the construction —
a trial pole, the closing error, the corrected pole.

The thrust line must stay inside the ring. If it does,
the safe theorem says the arch stands. A ring too thin at the
mid-points of its end joints may still be admissible once those ends
are free: the limit line runs through the extrados at both
springings.
Mechanism
The line of thrust cannot leave the ring: where it would,
it stays hooked at the intrados or the extrados between two voussoirs,
and that point is a hinge. With this on, the thrust slider alone
commands the line — the other two parameters are chosen to keep
it as far from both faces as it can be, so hinges form on their own as
the thrust is pushed.
